In one of the city’s largest-ever environmental drives, 30,000 volunteers joined forces for International Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 under the theme ‘Namma Chennai, Namma Responsibility’. The massive campaign, organized by the NGO CommuniTREE in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Corporation, Indian Coast Guard, and several other government and conservation partners, covered a staggering 44 stretches of Chennai’s coastline, from Kasimedu to Kovalam.

The collective effort led to the removal of over 210 tonnes of plastic and other waste, demonstrating a strong commitment to protecting the city’s marine ecosystems. Participants included a diverse mix of students, NCC and NSS cadets, and members from NGOs, Rotary, Lions, and various corporate groups.

The cleanup at Marina Beach was attended by PCCF Srinivas Reddy, who honoured the dedication of the volunteers. At the Elliot’s Beach stretch, the event was organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) (South Zone) and graced by South Zonal Director Aravindan, IPS. Taking the campaign a step further, the NCB team also led a ‘Say No to Drugs’ pledge, connecting the mission for a clean environment with the goal of a drug-free society.
