The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has once again solidified its position as a leader in Indian education by topping the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) for 2025. The results, announced on Sept.4 by the Ministry of Education, mark a decade of excellence for the institution.

For the 10th consecutive year, IIT Madras secured the No. 1 rank in the ‘Engineering’ category, a position it has held since the NIRF rankings began. It also maintained its top spot in the ‘Overall’ category for the 7th consecutive year.

This year, IIT Madras achieved a new milestone by claiming the No.1 rank in the ‘Innovations’ category, improving from its No.2 position last year. This success follows the recent launch of its School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, aimed at creating a world-class ecosystem for deep-tech startups.

The institute also held onto its Rank No.2 in the ‘Research Institutions’ category and debuted with the No.1 rank in the newly introduced ‘Sustainability Development Goals’ (SDG) category.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan congratulated the institute, emphasising the role of robust ranking systems in nation-building and ensuring quality. IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti attributed the consistent success to the collective efforts of students, faculty, alumni, and staff.

Beyond rankings, IIT Madras continues to innovate, having recently opened a campus in Zanzibar, launched ‘Sports Excellence Admission,’ and incubated over 100 startups in the past year.
